VET in Schools (VETiS)
VETiS is funded by the Queensland Government through the Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET). This program helps school students.
What is VETiS
VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools) allows high school students in Years 10, 11, and 12 to complete nationally recognised vocational qualifications while finishing their senior secondary certificate. It provides hands-on, industry-developed skills that count towards a QCE and leads directly to employment or further training.
A student in Year 10, 11 and 12 can undertake a:
- Funded Certificate I or II – general training
- Funded school-based apprenticeship or traineeship
Points to note:
- VETiS students are not supported to undertake more than one DTET-funded qualification at the same time. However, they could do one DTET funded qualification, a fee-for-service qualification and a qualification delivered by their school concurrently (at the same time), as detailed in the VETiS summary of eligibility table.
- There is no DTET requirement for a student to do a Certificate I or II before they do a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Career Tasters will provide an opportunity for students to try a skill area before enrolling in a qualification.
School Students do not have to pay any student for co-contribution fees under the VETiS program.
VETiS General Pathway
This pathway is designed for students who want to gain practical, industry-specific skills and "job-ready" training to transition into employment or further training, but it does not require them to be employed as a school-based apprentice or trainee.
VETiS School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship A VETiS School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship Is a Queensland government-subsidised program allowing students in Years 10, 11, or 12 to earn a wage, gain a nationally recognised qualification (often Cert II or III), and complete their QCE simultaneously. It allows students to combine school, training, and work, essentially starting their career while still in school.
Note: For 2026, VETiS programs are transitioning to be under the Career Ready program. It is important to note that a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship is a distinct type of
VETiS pathway that differs from general training, as it requires a direct contractual arrangement with an employer.

Eligibility?
General Training Pathway
To access a funded training place under VETiS, in a general training pathway, a school student must:
- Be a student enrolled in Years 10, 11 or 12 in a Queensland secondary school;
- Not be an international secondary school exchange student;
- Not have already completed a certificate I or II VETiS qualification funded by DTET;
- Have a genuine interest in pursuing a post school vocational occupation.
School Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship Pathway
School students can only undertake apprenticeships and traineeships through a registered SAT. To be eligible to receive government subsidised training, the school based apprentice or trainee must:
- Have entered into a Contract (training contract) for a qualification funded by DTET and be registered on DTET's training database, and;
- Not have already completed or be enrolled in a SAT.
Note: A student can only undertake two funded apprenticeship/traineeship qualifications across the suite of core programs: VETiS; Career Start and Career Boost, within a 10-year period. A SAT uses one of these entitlements.
