Advancements in any role that puts people at risk is an exciting topic and when you pair it with leading-edge technology that takes form as a dog…..you have our attention.
Spot by Boston Dynamics is the latest and most talked about artificial intelligence to hit the Civil and Building and Construction industry. Designed to capture and monitor construction progress, assess work health and safety risks with the ability to work in remote, dangerous, and unsafe site conditions. Spot can also cross-check building work done matches the architectural plans and offer contractors a practical path for automating workflows. The robot dog can navigate stairs and other obstacles using its four legs without issue, and either work semi-autonomously or be controlled by a remote making it an interesting addition to any construction site.
With Queensland being the first state to introduce the industrial manslaughter law to the resources industry in 2020, it seems this type of advancement in WHS has come at the perfect time.
But the question being asked is will the technology take over from needing people at all in the future? Is this the start of science over jobs in the construction industry? Or will Spot become the best thing to hit tradies since bunnings snags.
