A 151% increase in general construction activity has been reported in parts of North West Queensland. As demand for skilled civil construction workers, plant operators and concreters increases, now is the time to get qualified.
“North West Queensland is projected to deliver an estimated $575M in construction activity over the next 12 months – an increase of 151% on the previous 12 months”, says CSQ CEO Brett Shimming.[1]
The activity is expected to be driven by over 24 of large construction projects confirmed for delivery in the next 2-3 years. This of course, not including the 37 other potential projects. [1]
Brett Shimming elaborated that “the project pipeline is valued at between $285 million (committed) and $2.4 billion (committed + potential) over the coming years. [1]
Table1: The top 5 major construction projects committed or underway in North West Queensland[1]
Black Rock Cave Project | $400,000,000 | Underway |
Rocklands Project | $200,000,000 | Underway |
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School – Mt Isa | $5,500,000 | Committed |
Cloncurry Equestrian Centre – Masterplan | $3,500,000 | Underway |
Hughenden and Richmond Hospitals Staff Accommodation | $2,000,000 | Underway |
“…The majority of these projects being large engineering projects, CSQ predicts an increased demand for civil construction workers, including earthmoving plant operators, concreters and labourers.” [1]
With activity up and demand for skilled workers increasing, local workers are presented with great opportunity to get Trade Qualified and even further their career progression in the industry.
Career pathways for civil workers
Many of our students who complete the RII30915 Certificate III in Civil Construction look for pathways into site supervision after some time on the ground. The RII40715 Certificate IV in Civil Construction Supervision supports the pathway up the ladder to a Leading Hand or Foreman role.
For those wanting to get into a site management role, the RII50415 Diploma of Civil Construction Management through to the Advanced Diploma is the perfect pathway for your future.
Career pathways for plant operators
Much like the civil construction pathway, starting out as a Plant Operator, skilled workers can move through the various qualifications needed to support their career progression into Site Management roles.
See how one of our students Nick moved through the qualification pathway from Plant Operations to RII40715 Certificate IV in Civil Construction Supervision. But why stop there?! Nick is still progression and making great progress in his career.
