FAQ

A VOC (Verification of Competency) is a method of assessment that assists employers to meet WHS requirements ensuring that their workers are still competent and can clearly demonstrate their capacity to operate equipment or perform the tasks relevant to their job role.

VOCs are often required:

  • to assist in the maintenance of work health and safety requirements
  • to manage the currency of your employees
  • as part of pre-employment checks
  • as part of ongoing site requirements

Each individual assessment takes approximately 1 to 2½hrs and will depend on the type of plant and/or requirement of employer/site.

Prior to commencing the VOC process, you must provide your or Statement of Attainment (for the relevant RII unit of competency you have previously completed).

You also need to be able to provide or have access to the relevant plant equipment on the day of your assessment.

For workers

It is important to make sure that your skills are kept up-to-date with current industry standards.

For employers

According to Safe Work Australia it is now the legal responsibility of the employer to ensure that the skills of staff working on site are up to date and compliant. In January 2012, a new set of Workplace Health and Safety laws were introduced putting more responsibility on employers’ due diligence and obligations to ensure that their employees have “current competency”.
