Parks and gardens are at the centre of the community and support infrastructure within a green environment. The AHC31016 Certificate III in Horticulture Parks and Gardens will give you the skills and knowledge to start your career in maintaining and creating public green spaces using environmentally sustainable work practices.

In this course, you’ll gain skills in tree inspections, soil analysis, controlling weeds and plant pests and how to inspect park facilities. Each of the units are designed to stretch your knowledge with practical skills, whether that involves you learning how to run a landscape maintenance program, being hands-on in a plant establishment program or understanding the chemicals to be used on public garden and turf areas. You will be mentored throughout the course to help you along the way.

This course can give you multiple pathway options across the horticulture industry.

This course is aimed at anyone looking to kick start their career in parks, gardens or landscaping. Throughout this course, you will develop the necessary skills and knowledge to work in the management and maintenance of public and private parks, reserves and gardens, natural bushland and community recreation areas.

Workbook

Sometimes we like to get back to basics with the way we teach! If you’re better on the tools working on irrigation systems or creating breath-taking plant displays than trying to find your way around a computer – we’ve got your back! At FTA, we’re determined to ensure you learn how you learn best.

To achieve this qualification, you must demonstrate competency in 5 core units and 11 elective units from the options below.

The course duration will vary depending on your experience, skills and chosen study mode. As a guide:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): 3-6 months- this term may be extended by Funding Criteria, amount of RPL awarded and subsequent Gap Training required  – eligibility criteria apply.
  • Fee for Service: 3-12 months subject to the amount of RPL awarded and subsequent Gap Training required

Your skills will be assessed through a mix of practical and theory tasks. Which is essentially showing us what you’ve learnt and how you do it.

Theory may be assessed Online or via Workbook. Practical Assessment will be conducted at your place of work or worksite with fit-for-purpose facilities and equipment which are to be made available to your FTA trainer & Assessor for training and assessment purposes.

Do you have the right green fingers to enrol?

You must be currently employed in industry to gain entry to this course. 

Eligible students must be over the age of 18 unless they have written permission from a parent or guardian who must co-sign the enrollment documentation.

If you are a local or non-English speaking international student who thinks you may be challenged by theory or bookwork when you’re more a hands-on type of person, you won’t be out of your comfort zone. FTA understands this and will conduct an assessment to make sure you have the language, literacy and numeracy skills required before starting your course so you are fully equipped for the challenge.
