What are the trades career levels?

Where you are in your career in trades will depend on your experience, training and level of education.

Level 1

Certificate I & II

This is the entry level of your career and the qualifications can be completed by those at a year 10 high school level or higher. This level is done generally before your apprenticeship and involves teaching the fundamentals of your chosen industry such as building and construction, civil or horticulture. It can include minor maintenance, serving as a general hand and more.

Level 2

Certificate III

Here you reach trade level, you’ll be choosing your qualification based on the type of tradesperson you wish to be, such as a carpenter, concreter, tiler, plasterer, road worker, landscaper, pipelayer and so much more. Here is where you will do your apprenticeship.

Level 3

Certificate IV

This level of your career is based on the experience you have gained over the years, this level is for those looking to upskill into specialist trades, civil construction, site management, contract administration, estimating, or sales, to name just a few. This certificate is especially useful for those looking to assume more managerial authority including supervising.

Level 4

Diploma & Advanced Diploma

Here is where the heights of your career can be reached and is for those looking to pursue a more progressive career path within their industry of either building and construction or civil construction. Level 4 is for those looking to get off the tools and have a higher level of responsibilities in management.
